Sports Gambling In Delaware Official After Supreme Court Ruling
The NFL will have their hands full if they decide to challenge Delaware's new sports gambling laws. The state Supreme Court has now ruled that the law should remain in place, dealing a crucial blow to the NFL and other sports leagues.
"It will be difficult for the NFL to prove that they are against sports betting now that they are allowing owners in their leagues to gain revenue money from lottery gambling," said observer Mark Hrenel.
NFL owners recently gave their approval to teams working with state lotteries in order to gain revenue. Two teams, Washington and New England, have already signed deals with the state lottery to use their logos on scratch off lottery gambling tickets.
"We will review the Delaware Supreme Court's advisory opinion on this matter," said NFL Spokesman Jeff Miller, "We do not believe that promoting additional betting on college and professional athletes and games is healthy for sports."
The NFL could pursue a longer legal battle if they choose. They could bring a lawsuit to the Supreme Court to attempt to stop the gambling, but that would take time and valuable resources.
Delaware, meanwhile, now has the right to start building the foundation of how the sports betting will work. Governor Jack Markell, who pushed for the sports gambling, was pleased with the Supreme Court's ruling.
"This decision resolves the legal issue... and provides a solid legal framework for our sports lottery," said Markell.
