Any gambler that bets on Major League Baseball knows that the season is a marathon, and not a sprint. The first few weeks of the season rarely reflect how teams will finish within their divisions and leagues.

This year, however, the first couple of weeks are going to be even more jumbled for bettors. Spring training games have already produced some significant injuries that will keep player out of the lineup when the season begins.

Lance Berkman is a player that the Houston Astros have relied on for years to produce in the middle of their batting order. Berkman, however is headed for surgery that will keep him out for at least four weeks, a date dangerously close to the start of the season.

Ian Kinsler has been shut down by the Texas Rangers for one week. While this is not as significant as Berkman's injury, it still gives the Rangers and their fans reasons to be concerned as the season approaches.

Albert Pujols is a player that is expected to compete for the triple crown every year, and his spring is usually filled with off days for some nagging injury. This year is no different, with Pujols already missing several games. Fans have learned not to worry about Pujols, who despite the injuries, still has responded with huge years recently.

The Mets are a team that was ravaged by injuries last year. This season appears to be starting out the same, with Carols Beltran out at least the first month of the season, and Jose Reyes now out two to eight weeks while dealing with a thyroid issue.

Three weeks still remain before the first games of 2010 will be played, but injuries are mounting. For gamblers, there is now a wait and see approach before deciding which teams will be a safe bet going into opening day.
