St. Louis Rams Gambling On Haslett To Turn Season Around
Jim Haslett knows how to win football games. He comes from the coaching tree of Bill Cowher, and has been the defensive coordinator for many successful Pittsburgh Steeler teams. Now he will be trusted with turning around one of the worst teams in the NFL.
The St. Louis Rams fired their head coach Scott Linehan on Monday. The move comes after the Rams blew a lead against the Buffalo Bills and fell to 0-4 going into their bye week.
The Rams have now been one of the NFL's worst teams for several years. They have lost seventeen of their last twenty games and have not been competitive in many of those games. Ownership felt now was the time for the change.
The trouble began for Linehan last week when he decided to bench starting quarterback Marc Bulger. Bulger had the respect of his teammates and one in particular, running back Steven Jackson, publicly criticized the move.
Jackson was given a long term contract so it could not have helped Linehan that Jackson was as adamant about the benching as he was. Th final straw took place Sunday when the Rams began the game strongly and finished with the Bills scoring the last twenty five points in the game.
Haslett now takes over the team and will have the bye week to figure out if he will once again turn to Bulger. He could gain instant credibility with the players if he decides to do so.
