Strasburg Tommy John Surgery May Alter Nationals Betting Odds
The Washington Nationals are considered to be an up and coming team in the National League East. The Nationals were expected to have a strong one, two, punch at the top of their rotation next season with Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmerman.
The news of possible Tommy John Surgery for Strasburg hit Washington fans hard on Friday. If the rookie phenom has the surgery, it is likely he would miss the entire 2011 season, a big blow to the team and their fans.
Strasburg came on strong in his first season with the Nationals, striking out fourteen in his first start. From there, Strasburg was consistent until dealing with two separate injury's in the past month. The second injury, suffered earlier in his last start, may be the one that keeps Strasburg out all of next year.
Bryce Harper was the first round pick of the Nationals this season, and with his enormous potential and Strasburg's arm, Washington is showing that they can build a winner in the East. Ryan Zimmerman anchors the offense, and with the young talent coming up, a playoff appearance may not have been far off.
Without Strasburg next year, it will be a much more difficult task to climb out of the cellar in the East. The Phillies are also stacked with young talent, and have won the National League title two years in a row. Atlanta is leading the division this season, and also has some emerging young stars.
Moving into the second tier in the division may still be realistic for Washington. The Florida Marlins have refused to increase their payroll and it is starting to catch up to them in the standings. The Mets are looking at an off season where they may have to completely tear things apart and rebuild.
