Super Bowl Betting Again Goes In Favor Of The Underdog
When the New Orleans Saints came marching into town this past week, not many analysts gave them a chance to win the Super Bowl. On Sunday night, they not only won the game, but did so by dominating much of the game.
The Indianapolis Colts were the betting favorites and for the second time in the past three Super Bowl's, the favorite lost the game outright. If last year's Arizona Cardinals cover is added in, that is three straight wins for the underdogs.
The Saints looked anything but like underdogs after the first quarter of play. The Colts jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, but were unable to muster much offense after the first quarter. New Orleans, meanwhile, appeared to get stronger offensively as the game went on.
The Saints set the tone right at the opening kick of the second half. New Orleans pulled off a successful onside kick and took the air out of the Colts in the process. A few plays later, the Saints took their first lead of the game.
Indianapolis looked like they were driving for a tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but the New Orleans defense picked off Peyton Manning for the first time in the game and returned the pick for a touchdown. That put them up fourteen points.
From there, it was one more goal line stand with less than two minutes left and the Saints were champions. Sports books have not yet announced the figures, but it is expected that around $100 million was bet on the game.
