Three NCAA Number One Seeds From Big East No Longer A Safe Bet
There are always hundreds of story lines that surround college basketball when the conference tournaments begin. This year was no different, and one of the main stories was whether the Big East could secure three of the four NCAA tournament number one seeds.
Anyone betting on that to happen has lost themselves some money, or pride, depending on the nature of the bets. As is the case most of the time with sports, story lines are only as good as the teams playing them out.
Going into the Big East tournament, Pittsburgh was ranked number two in the country, with Connecticut the number three team, and Louisville at number five. The irony of these rankings is that the Cardinals were actually the regular season champs in the conference.
The three teams being ranked that high made many experts believe all three could lock up number one seeds for the NCAA tournament. Louisville would have to win the Big East tournament, with the Panthers and Huskies both playing deep into the tournament.
After just two days of the event, the only team left standing is Louisville. Pittsburgh and Connecticut both were upset on Thursday. The Panthers lost to West Virginia, and the Huskies lost a six overtime thriller to Syracuse.
Now, for the Panther to gain a number one seed other teams will have to falter in their conference tournaments. One team already has. Oklahoma, the nation's number six team, lost to Oklahoma State.
That leaves Memphis, North Carolina, Michigan State, Wake Forrest, Duke, and possibly Villanova as teams that could benefit from the Big East upsets. If none of those teams take advantage, maybe the Panthers and Huskies will slip back in the back door to the number one seeds.
