Major League Baseball position players are just a couple of weeks away from reporting to camp, and two players, Johnny Damon and Curtis Granderson, may feel as though they have been traded for one another. A source now claims that Damon is close to signing with the Detroit Tigers.
All winter long, Tigers fans had been wondering why the team traded Granderson to the New York Yankees. If Damon signs with the team, it will all make sense. Detroit would have picked up prospects for Granderson, and received a better hitter in return.
Damon has been at the top of some of the more potent offenses in the last decade. He helped Boston overcome a three game deficit in the ALCS against the Yankees, and then last year helped New York re-claim they spot on top of the baseball world.
Granderson will fit in well in pinstripes. He is the ultimate professional on a team that now looks as though they have a locker room full of consummate pros. Damon, however, could be a difference maker in Detroit.
The Tigers fell just short of the playoffs last year when they gave away the American League Central to the Minnesota Twins in the seasons last week. Damon has a history of coming up big in key spots, and that is something the Tigers have been missing from their potent offenses the past several years.
The deal is not yet complete, but should Detroit sign Damon, the balance of power in the Central may have once again shifted in their direction. Whether hitting lead-off or in the two position, Damon brings the one thing Detroit has been missing, a winner.
