The baseball season has reached the All Star break, and that usually is a sign that the strong teams in the league are about to start stepping up. The Tigers, Mets, Dodgers, and Yankees, will need strong second halves if they are planning on making the playoffs.

The Detroit Tigers were the in vogue pick this season before any games were played. Many experts predicted they would have one of the most potent offenses of all time. That's why they play the games.

Midway through the season, the Tigers are still struggling and find themselves looking up at two teams in their own division. If they are going to fulfill their lofty goals, they will need a big second half of the season.

The New York Mets were in a similar spot as the Tigers for most of the first half. They struggled so badly at times that they cost their manager Willie Randolph his job mid season.

A recent nine game winning streak has pulled them into contention, but they will have to continue their strong play if they are going to compete in the NL East with Philadelphia.

In the National League West there resides the Dodgers. Another team that has underachieved this season, they should get a boost from Don Mattingly who will become their hitting coach after the All Star break.

The other New York team, the Yankees, decided in spring training that they were going to go with their young arms. That decision has hurt them in the first half, and if they expect to make the playoffs as they do most every year, they will also need a monster second half.

For all these teams, the opportunity for greatness is still there for the taking. The window is just closing a bit more with each passing day.
