Time For MLB To Play Dumb Involving Scout Gambling Case
The NBA this past summer played the naive card very well when dealing with a gambling scandal involving one of their referees. The league claimed that they did not know that their referees were involved in a betting ring involving games they were refereeing.
Instead of facing the problem head on, the league chose to only ridicule the one referee who was caught and charged with a crime. Although others were most certainly involved, the league looked the other way.
Now it is Major League Baseball who will be in that same position as the NBA was. One scout has already been fired for being involved in an alleged gambling ring, and now other scouts' names are surfacing.
Baseball has the option to nip this in the bud and create their own investigation into the matter. The more likely scenario, however, involves them doing nothing until they are absolutely forced to.
Major sports leagues do not like to admit there is scandal within their sport. They wait until the Federal government gets involved, and by then they are simply trying to save face.
The steroid issue never would have come to light had it not been for Congressional pressure on the league. All sports like to paint the picture that they have everything under control, that nothing could infiltrate their system.
So now baseball will be faced with another decision. Take a look at all scouts in their league, or wait until the federal government does. Either way, the truth on this gambling ring will come out.
