Top Boxer the Main Event at Fitzgerald's Casino
Whitfield's rise continues Saturday night at Fitzgerald's Casino in Tunica, where he'll take on Roberto Gomez (14-16-3) as part of a six-bout professional boxing card scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m. and all the sportsbooks will be watching.
"He's another tough Mexican who's gone a lot of rounds and has a lot of experience," Whitfield, 24, said Thursday of Gomez. "But I've been against guys with experience before. I'm going to go in there, feel him out in the first round and then break him down."
Tickets, available at the Fitzgerald's gift shop, are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
"Rayonta is one of the most electrifying young boxers in the sport today," Prize Fight's Brian Young said. "His skill and ability are second only to his character."
Also on Saturday night's card is undefeated Memphis teenager Ira Terry, a 19-year-old lightweight who's 5-0 with three knockouts, and Josiah Judah (5-0), a 27-year-old super middleweight and the younger brother of three-time world champion Zab Judah. Terry will take on St. Louis' Cornell Jackson (11-14-1), while Judah meets Jackson, Tenn., native Ricardo Swift (0-3).
Young's Prize Fight Boxing also announced Thursday it will hold a 2 p.m. press conference today at Isaac Hayes' restaurant downtown to announce "a major signing in the world of professional boxing."
The fighter, whom Prize Fight declined to identify Thursday, is a three-time world champion, who, according to Young, has appeared on HBO and Showtime several times in his career.
