Britain's Top Jockey Charged in Sports Gambling Probe
Top jockey Kieren Fallon was among 11 people charged Monday in connection with Britain's biggest investigation into alleged race fixing in sports gambling events. Jockeys Fergal Lynch and Darren Williams, trainer Alan Berry and former racing syndicate director Miles Rodgers also were charged with conspiracy to defraud. All are accused of conspiring to defraud customers of the online betting exchange Betfair.
The alleged offenses occurred between December 2002 and September 2004, police said. All are to appear in court July 17; the other 17 people under investigation have not been charged. Police spent more than two years looking into more than 80 races before arresting and questioning 28 people.
Fallon initially was detained for three weeks in 2004 in connection with the investigation. The 41-year-old Irishman won a Breeders' Cup race in 2003 and captured his second straight Irish Derby on Sunday. The Irish Turf Club said Fallon will be allowed to ride in Ireland.
