UFL Attempting To Attract Sports Fans By Endorsing Gambling
The National Football League and sports gambling have had a love, hate, relationship for many years. The NFL hates the idea that gambling drives its sport, but loves the interest that is generated due to the betting.]
The UFL is taking a different approach. UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue is not only being honest about gambling on his sport, he is endorsing the idea. In an extreme change from the norm in American sports, the UFL believes that gambling should be a part of the experience.
"We embrace gambling in our league," said Huyghue, in an interview with Las Vegas Weekly. "We think Vegas is the right spot, and want to make it the pinnacle headquarter franchise for our league. We don't feel we have to follow the NFL philosophy all the way through. That's what our owners invested in."
The UFL has tried to lure the NFL to invest in the league, but endorsing a taboo subject such as gambling will certainly not help the UFL's cause. According to several analysts, if the NFL were ever to get involved, it would be under the premise that gambling was far from the sport.
The league will be entering its second season and the Las Vegas Locomotives are looking forward to year two. Jim Fassel, a former head coach in the NFL with the New York Giants, is the head coach. The players and coaches will live at home this year, and new uniforms will be unveiled.
Commissioner Huyghue acknowledged that he would like for the NFL to be on board moving forward, but he also stressed that he wants the league to develop their own standards. Currently, several players that started in the UFL have moved into the NFL and had roles with NFL teams this past year.
