UK Jockey Appears in Court Accused of Match-Fixing

The six-time champion jockey Kieren Fallon appeared in court on race-fixing charges in London, England.

The 41-year-old Irishman appeared alongside ten others, including fellow jockeys Fergal Lynch and Darren Williams, on charges of conspiracy and fraud. Fallon spoke only to give his name, age, and address in London Magistrates' Court. All the defendants were released on bail pending a hearing at Southwark Crown Court. The date hasn't been set.

One of British horse racing's most successful jockeys, Fallon was among 11 people charged by police in "Operation Crypton", Britain's biggest race-fixing investigation. The defendants are accused of conspiring to defraud customers of an online betting exchange between December 2002 and September 2004.

Fallon was among 28 people who appeared at Bishopsgate police station in London earlier this month. British racing's regulatory body has banned Fallon from riding in Britain until he is cleared of all charges. The case isn't expected to go to trail until July 2007. Fallon lost his appeal against the ban last week.

Fallon, who is still licensed to ride outside Britain, won his third Irish Oaks title on Sunday. Speaking in Ireland, he said the charges were "not bothering me."

"When I get in the stalls I switch off from it, I am used to the pressure," he said. "It was right to let me ride as I have done nothing wrong."
