Uruguay Survives Upset At World Cup, Gamblers Relieved
Uruguay and Brazil were in the position of having to stave off upsets on Friday in South Africa. The 2010 World Cup has provided plenty of upsets so far, and on Friday another was delivered by the Netherlands.
Gamblers have been unable to get a grasp on which of the top teams are going to show up on a given day. Already in this tournament, England and Spain have been shocked by opponents not on the same talent level as themselves, and on Friday the trend continued.
Before the World Cup began, the Netherlands were actually considered one of the favorites to advance this far. What nobody had them doing, however, was upsetting a Brazilian team that had looked beautiful in their early round games. The way Brazil was eliminated is even more shocking to soccer fans.
The Netherlands were down 1-0 at halftime, and Brazil is usually unbeatable when leading at the half. The Dutch tied the score early in the second half, and scored another goal later to go to a 2-1 victory. The win places the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
Their opponent in the semi-finals will be Uruguay. It almost did not end up that way, when Ghana received a penalty kick in the 120th minute of the match. Ghana missed the kick, and the teams went to the penalty kick sudden death tiebreaker.
Uruguay survived by burying four of their five shots, while Ghana missed two of the four they took. The Ghana loss means that all of the African nations have now been eliminated from this year's World Cup. No African team has ever advanced to the semi-finals.
