US News $ World Report unveiled their list of top colleges on Tuesday and it differed greatly from the college football betting odds. While Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, and Boise St. are favored in football, it was the Ivy League schools that topped the rankings for education.
Harvard has long been considered to be a top school in the US and this year they are on top of that list all by themselves. Harvard beat out Princeton, which fell from a tie for first, to second. Yale was third on the list, with Columbia and Stanford rounding out the top five.
The rankings for the colleges are done using different variables, much like the BCS standings for college football. Instead of using athletic statistics, however, the schools are judged on areas such as test scores, peer evaluations, and selectivity.
US News & World Report has been offering the ranking since 1983. Harvard and Princeton have been the standard by which other schools have been judged for the past nine years. No other school has cracked the top two in those years.
While college administrators are focused on improving the educational standing, the athletic programs are working to build a higher profile for the schools. College football is the driving force behind that popularity, and no school has done a better job at raising their presence than Alabama.
The Crimson Tide are coming into the new season as the betting favorites to win another championship. Ohio State, Florida, and Boise State are also receiving a lot of respect from gamblers before the season begins.
The college football season kicks off in early September and runs throughout the Fall. The BCS Championship game stretches the season all the way into the first week of January.
