US Open Betting Odds: Rain Delays Gambling Action Until Friday
If there is going to be a US Open in the beginning of the summer, tournament organizers know that there is a strong possibility that rain will ruin at least one of the four days. On Thursday, rain washed out the first round of this year's event.
Puddles of water were visible throughout the course at Bethpage by midday Thursday. Of the 156 players entered, half did not even play a hole at the gold course. Now they must patiently wait for Friday.
"The volume of rain falling was outpacing our ability to squeegee the greens," said Jim Hyler, Chairman of the USGA's championship committee, "That was the bottom line. The greens just became unplayable and we needed to suspend."
The chairman and the rest of the committee made the decision shortly before 2:00 PM. The tournament has not ended on a Monday since 1983, but it appears that is where they may be headed if they cannot make up the rest of round one over the weekend.
Tiger Woods had played the first six holes in defense of last years championship. He was at one over par when play was stopped. There were four golfers who were at one under par before the rain halted play.
Woods is the overwhelming betting favorite to defend his title. The sentimental choice is Phil Mickelson, whose wife Amy is currently battling breast cancer.
