US Open Golf Betting Odds: Woods The Gambling Favorite At Bethpage
Tiger Woods is up against history at this year's US Open. Last year, Woods beat Rocco Mediate on a broken down leg, in an eighteen hole playoff to capture the US Open title, and that is only where the history lesson begins.
Tomorrow, the US Open returns to Bethpage in New York for the first time since 2002. That, coincidentally, ended the same way that last year's Open ended, with Woods holding the trophy. Oh, and there is also the history of Woods chasing his fourth Open victory, which would tie him for the most all time.
With all of those factors together, the odds makers could not help themselves when they made Woods the betting favorite to win the tournament this weekend. He is +150 to capture the crown. Another emotionally charged player, Phil Mickelson is the second choice at +800.
Mickelson will be back on the golf course with a heavy heart. His wife has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, and Mickelson has taken some time off to tend to the personal matter. He is always a fan favorite in New York, and emotionally he should get a lift from the legions of fans who will show up to root him on.
Geoff Ogilvy has moved up to be the third choice. He has odds of +1500, followed by Jim Furyk at +2000, and Jim Casey and Padraig Harrington, both at +2500. The tournament begins on Thursday, and will run through Sunday.
Harrington and Woods will be paired together with Angel Cabrera to form one of the groups the gallery will be following. Their tee time is set for 8:06 AM. Mickelson will start in the afternoon, and will be paired with Retief Goosen and Ernie Els.
