US Pulls Off Miracle Sunday, Advances In Confederations Cup
It was the most unlikeliest of Sunday's for the US soccer team. Facing almost certain elimination, the US team took the field on Sunday and played inspired soccer. What happened next was magical.
The US beat Egypt 3-0, and, combined with a 3-0 win by Brazil over Italy, the win sent the national team into the next round of the Confederations Cup. Their reward is a date with the top team in the world, Spain, on Wednesday.
Most importantly for the US, the Confederations Cup serves as a preliminary tournament leading up to the World Cup. The US team has several other tournaments before next year's World Cup, but none of them will have the level of competition they will see these past few weeks.
The Brazil game was particularly shocking. Italy has a storied tradition when it comes to soccer, and they do not lose by three goals often. The Brazilians finished the group with a perfect 3-0 record. While Italy was 1-2 in the group.
Egypt and the US both had a chance to advance once the Italians lost. Egypt needed to only hold the US to a 2-0 or less score. They were unable to do so with the US playing aggressively throughout the match.
Looking forward to the next match, Spain comes in having won thirty-five matches in a row. It will be a daunting task for the US, but after Sunday's improbable outcome, anything must seem possible to the US team.
