USA Battling Heavy Betting Odds Going Into Summer Olympics

The USA men's basketball team has always had to deal with overwhelming betting odds at the Olympics. In the time since Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird were initial members of the 1992 Dream Team, the Americans have been heavy favorites to win gold.

This summer will be no different for the Americans. Instead of Jordan, Johnson, and Bird, the US team this year will be led by one aging veteran, Kobe Bryant, and several young superstars in Lebron James and Kevin Durant. While the names on the back of the jerseys have changed, the expectations for the US squad have not.

The US is once again a heavy favorite heading into the London Olympics. With odds of 1/7, gamblers will have to lay $700, to win $100. It is a heavy price to pay, but many experienced gamblers are willing to take the chance.

"I've already put a few hundred on the US," said Walter Bixton, who admitted to betting on the US in the past two Olympics. "I only live twenty minutes from Las Vegas, so every Olympics I have put a few hundred on the US team. It has only burned me once, but I don't see this team losing in London."

If not the US, odds makers are predicting that Spain has the next best shot to capture the gold. The Spaniards have odds of 11/2, which represents a decent shot at winning the gold. After Spain, the rest of the countries competing are considered long shots to win the gold.

Argentina and France share odds of 28/1, with Lithuania and Russia coming in at 33/1. Brazil and Greece are considered two teams that could make things difficult for Spain and the US, although the sports books still consider them to be long shot choices to win gold at 40/1.

The London games may be the last for Americans to enjoy the top NBA players at the Olympics. NBA Commissioner David Stern has gone on record suggesting that he may facilitate a 25 year-old age limit for future Olympics.
