USA Vs. England World Cup Gambling Recap: Betting On A Draw Wins
Soccer is the one sport in the world where a draw can actually win a gambler money. The World Cup so far has had several draws in the early matches, and gamblers who have bet on these draws have been victorious.
The USA and England squared off in one of the most anticipated matches of the 2010 World Cup on Saturday. England was a heavy betting favorite, and the US squad, although they did not admit as much, would have been happy with a draw.
The first five minutes of the game, the US looked as though the spotlight may have been too bright on them. England scored early, and the Americans' defense was shaky. Before half, however, Clint Dempsey scored on the most improbable of shots.
Dempsey shot the ball on goal, and England's goaltender Robert Green fumbled the ball into his own net.
That goal seemed to have rejuvenated the US team. In the second half, the US tightened up their defense, and had several opportunities to go ahead. Jozy Altidore had perhaps the best chance, but the ball went off the goal post. For there, the Americans held off a furious offensive rush from England to gain the draw.
The draw means that the US will be positioned well to advance out of the group stage of this year's World Cup. The underdog role will be shed at least until the round of sixteen, as the US will be favored over both Algeria and Slovenia.
If the US can win the group, they will likely avoid Germany in the round of sixteen. If that occurs, the US would have a legitimate shot at making it to become one of the top eight teams standing. The next scheduled game for the US is next Friday against Slovenia.
