The Gilbert Arenas gun controversy in Washington has caused the New Jersey Nets to ban gambling on team flights. Other teams with veteran players, however, have steered clear of the ban.

The two top organizations in the league, the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics, have both said they will not ban gambling on their team flights. Lakers coach Phil Jackson believes the gambling is a release for players, and also feels the teams banning gambling are doing it for PR purposes.

"It's just a PR thing, personally," said Jackson, as reported by Yahoo Sports, "What are these players going to do when they get back to their hotels, when they are in their own space, even their houses? They're going to go to their rooms and gamble. I think maybe on planes would be a better spot for that because it could be monitored. It hasn't been a problem."

Jackson acknowledged that the Lakers have several players that gamble on team flights. He claims it has never been a problem, and that the players use the games as a form of relief from the physical and mental stress of the games.

Celtics Coach Doc Rivers and President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge both say that they will not be banning gambling anytime soon on Boston team flights. Rivers believes that there are no reasons to go to that "extreme."

Arenas has been suspended indefinitely by the NBA after a gun incident in the Wizards locker room. Arenas had several opportunities to apologize for his actions, but chose instead to poke fun at the serious situation.
