Webb Wins National League Cy Young Award

Major League Baseball has begun to hand out its post season awards this week and the National League Cy Young award went to Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb.

Webb was the leagues most consistent pitcher all season, he started out hot at 7-0 and carried that momentum all the way through the season to capture the award.

This season was a bit of a watered down version of what the national league usually produces in terms of pitching. Most seasons there would be three or four pitchers who could lay claim to having the best year. Only one person had the numbers to challenge Webb this year and that, of course, was Roger Clemens. He, however, only pitched half a season, and his win total was not there even though he was his usual dominant self for the time he did pitch.

Roy Oswalt was another pitcher who had the ERA and strikeout #s but did not have the win total to compete for the award.

Other awards already given out this week by baseball were the rookies of the year in both leagues.

Hansley Ramirez won the award in the national league, beating out Ryan Zimmerman and Ramirez' fellow teammates Dan Uggla and Josh Johnson.

In the American League, Justin Verlander, from the American League champion Detroit Tigers won the award. He beat out two pitching phenoms in their own right, Jonathon Papelbon and Francisco Liriano. Liriano is expecting to undergo Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss all of next season, a sign that maybe he was overused as a rookie.

The American League Cy Young will be released on Wednesday.
