Valentine's day is a day when the focus shifts from all other areas of life, including professional sports, to a persons significant other. This year, the sports world has made that an easy transition.

Sportsbooks have to be cringing about the prospects of the upcoming weekend. The NFL is finished for the year. The NBA will not be playing any meaningful games, just an exhibition with the greatest players in the world. College hoops is in the calm before the storm mode, and spring training is just beginning in baseball.

That leaves gamblers in the US with two choices. They can watch the Daytona 500 and randomly pick a couple of drivers to bet on, or, they can quickly familiarize with the game of soccer. Chances are, spending quality time and gaining brownie points comes in higher than both of those options.

Only a couple of weekends throughout the year have sports fans sicker than this weekend will make them. The baseball all star game weekend is one that comes to mind, but still, by that point fans have resorted themselves to the idea that it is baseball or nothing.

This weekend will be tougher on the soul. It is only weeks removed from the Super Bowl, and with that comes the natural sports depression that comes with the end of the football season.

In years past there have been big college games. Duke and North Carolina could bail out this time of year, but schedule makers were not kind this year. The big ACC match up was played on Wednesday night.

Even fans who do appreciate the game of soccer had their itch scratched on Wednesday when the USA almost guaranteed their birth in the 2010 World Cup by beating arch rival Mexico.

So here's to Valentine's Day, with no interruptions or sports distractions. On second thought, it is about time to start that fantasy baseball scouting, and that could take an entire weekend.
