Which MLB Teams Will Gamble On Free Agents At Winter Meetings?
In past years, the week of the Winter Meetings has been prime time for some of the biggest free agents in baseball to make their fortunes. The GM's of all teams are present at these meetings, and they are all looking to upgrade their teams in one way or another.
This year, the meetings are being held in Indianapolis and on Monday, team executives started to filter in throughout the day. The biggest question for this year will be which teams will take the financial plunge and gamble on the big name free agents.
This year's class is not as celebrated as classes in the past. The big names this year are Matt Holliday, Jason Bay, and John Lackey. All three have their downsides, but may have enough star power to command big dollars.
Of course, the other big name that could change the balance of power for next season is Toronto ace Roy Halladay. He is one of the top five pitchers in baseball, and if the Blue Jays can find a suitor, Halladay will be traded.
If not, that leaves the big three and a list of mediocre roster filling players. The Red Sox figure to land one of the top two bats. They have been tight lipped on Bay, and will not make a move on Holliday until they know Bay is going elsewhere.
The Yankees, usually big players in the off season, will be attempting to sign a couple of their own players before moving into the free agent market. Andy Pettite has agreed to come back for another season, but has yet to negotiate a price with the Yankees.
Johnny Damon is another player the Yankees would like to retain, but his price may be too high. Agent Scott Boras is looking for at least a four year deal for Damon. The Mets, Angels, Mariners, Dodgers, and White Sox all may be big players this week also.
