When a college athlete steps foot on campus at a major university, it is likely that within the first week they are lectured on the dangers of drinking and driving. At the University of Georgia, one of those men possibly doing the lecturing has now been arrested.

Athletic Director Damon Evans was arrested on Wednesday night on suspicion of DUI. Authorities detected alcohol odor in the car, and pointed to Evans' inability to stay in one lane when arresting the AD. Evans refused to take a breathalyzer test.

It is unknown yet how severely Evans will be punished for the offense. Athletes are held to a higher standard, and the athletic director at a university is an extension of the program just as much as the athletes and coaches. Historically, players have been suspended and sometimes kicked off of teams for drunk driving incidents.

Evans took over as the athletic director at Georgia back in 2003. He took over for one of the most popular men in Georgia history, Vince Dooley. By 2009, Evans had established himself as the creme of the crop when he won the Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year award for the Southeast region.

In addition to drunk driving charges, athletes are held to a standard in which they are expected to stay out of casinos and away from gambling on their sport. Violence, of course, is prohibited at every institution in the nation, regardless of circumstance.

On Thursday morning, Evans was released from custody. A passenger in Evans' car was also arrested on Wednesday evening. Evans will hold a news conference later this evening with officials from the University of Georgia, presumably to speak about his actions on Wednesday night.
