Will Sportsbooks Feel Effects Of Economy On Super Bowl Sunday?
The Super Bowl has set records in each of the past few years in regards to the amount of money that is being wagered on the game. This year, however, there will be one factor that could make the betting slow down considerably.
The economy in the US is heading down the wrong path and it comes at a crucial time for sportsbooks. The Super Bowl is their signature event, and it is possible that this year's game between the Cardinals and the Steelers will be a letdown for these legal bookmakers.
The average fan will most likely still bet on the game. The amount of those wagers will different than past years. People who used to bet $100, might now bet $50, and the trend may continue downward.
Proposition bets have become popular over the past decade. These are bets that have a smaller impact than the game itself. Bets such as who will win the coin toss, and which team will score first. This where the sportsbooks may feel the effects of the economy the worst.
"The bottom line is people just do not have the money they have had in years past. They will still bet on the game, but it will not be on the same grand scale that it has been recently," said Marc. H., a sportsbook employee in Las Vegas.
The betting line for this years game has the Steelers favored by a full touchdown. The line has not moved in the first week, which is unusual. Whether the line has not moved because people are betting on both teams, or because people just are not betting, is unknown.
