Wimbledon Gamblers Waiting Three Days For Mahut, Isner, Results
For gamblers, part of the excitement of placing a bet is to have the quick thrill of watching a sporting event for a couple of hours, and knowing whether the bet won or lost. For some Wimbledon gamblers, that has made the past two days grueling.
Nicolas Mahut and John Isner began their Wimbledon match on Tuesday, but darkness halted the match before the fifth and deciding set could begin. Then, on Wednesday, Isner and Mahut proceeded to set all kinds of tennis records by playing the fifth set for over seven hours.
The two competitors battled through 118 games, and they were still tied at 59-59 when officials stepped in to discuss whether to finish the match or to postpone it until Thursday. Isner pushed for continuing, but Mahut claimed he could no longer see, and when the two could not agree to continue, the match was again delayed another day.
The winner of this epic match was scheduled to play their next match on Thursday, but there has not been any word yet as to whether that match will be played once this match is completed. The players, and the gamblers that had placed wagers on the match, were all exhausted by the time Wednesday was over.
"I placed a bet on Tuesday, and now I am not going to even be here to collect if I win," said Marlon Barrow, who was vacationing in Las Vegas, but was scheduled to leave for home on Wednesday evening. "I guess if I win I'll just have to come back another time and collect."
The records on Wednesday were not just broken, they were shattered beyond recognition. The previous longest match ever played was six hours and thirty-three minutes. Isner and Mahut have been playing for an astonishing nine hours and fifty-eight minutes, and that is before play resumes tomorrow.
