With NFL Draft Approaching, Lions May Gamble On Stafford
In a sign that the Detroit Lions may have made their selection to become the number one overall pick on Saturday, General Manager Martin Mayhew told reporters he is expecting to have a deal done with their top pick before the draft begins.
Mayhew did not tip his hand as to which of the college prospect the Lions will chose, but just the fact that he admitted a deal would be in place pointed many experts towards Matthew Stafford.
Even before the news conference, Stafford was considered by most draft analysts to be going to Detroit at number one. The Lions are coming off a season in which they did not win a football game and are said to be looking for a player that they can build their future around.
While Stafford is the obvious choice for a team without a franchise quarterback, the Lions also have two other players that many consider could be taken with the first pick. Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith and Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry are also candidates to be the top pick.
Stafford has been competing with Mark Sanchez to be the top quarterback chosen in this years draft. The analysts have been split on who they believe will be the better NFL quarterback, but it appears that the Lions value Stafford more than Sanchez.
The draft begins on Saturday and the Lions also have the option of trading the number one pick. Mayhew said in his news conference today that the team has received a moderate amount if interest from other teams wanting to trade for the first pick.
