With NFL Draft On Horizon, Gambling On College Players Begins
The NFL draft has become somewhat of a circus act. Year after year, experts are paid big money to come up with their best prognostication of how the draft will unfold. Whether or not they are right, it does not mean the players chosen will turn into stars.
There is much more that goes into scouting a college player now than there was twenty years ago. Coaches and other members of an organization have specific tests that are designed to find out if a player fits into their system.
Even with all the tools available to them, draft busts happen much more than Hall of Fame players are chosen. This makes the weeks leading up to the draft seem inconsequential to some fans, but for organizations, it is a time for gambling.
This year's draft will take place in late April and the closer it gets, the more the players will be scrutinized in their every move. A player can do nothing in these last two months that NFL teams will not find out about.
Once a player gains momentum, it is hard to stop the train. This year it has been Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford that is receiving all the positive reviews. He is expected by many to be the first pick of the draft.
It did not hurt Stafford's stock value that he came out and actually said he would want to play for the Detroit Lions. Not too many players have been bold enough to admit such a thought.
After Stafford is when the games begin. There are a number of players that could go anywhere from two to twenty in this year's draft. Currently the most consistent top five has Eugene Monroe going to the Rams at number two, Aaron Curry to the Chiefs. B.J. Raji to Seattle, and Everette Brown, ironically enough, to the Cleveland Browns.
Regardless of who is picked in next months draft, one thing is certain. The NFL will be doing its best to hype the draft and keep the spotlight on themselves for at least a couple of more weeks.
