With Pitchers And Catchers Close, Yankees The Betting Favorites
The New York Yankees spit in the face of the global recession this off season by spending a record amount of money on free agents. Now, with a list of individual all stars, the Yankees have reclaimed what seems like their preseason birth right of being the betting favorites before the year starts.
The Yankees have 5-2 odds to win the World Series in the upcoming season. That does not mean they will win. They have been favored in many seasons past only to come up short when their collective group of all stars played selfishly.
Of course, this is the year the Yanks and their fans feel there will be a different outcome. They signed the three big free agents this winter in Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett. That alone gives the organization the confidence that seems inherent in the Bronx.
Even with all their off season moves, the Yanks still may only have a third place ball club in the American League East. Fans in Boston and Tampa have their own set of stars in their rotations that may trump the Yankees moves.
Boston still has Dice-K, Josh Beckett, and Jon Lester at the top of their rotation and the Rays have five above average starters. While both teams may end up better than the Yankees, the betting odds do not reflect that sentiment. Boston is a 15-2 choice, and Tampa is 12-1 to win it all.
Over in the National League, the Cubs and Mets are co-favorites, both at 7-1 to win the championship. The defending champion Philadelphia Phillies are 11-1.
