World Cup 2010 First Round Betting Odds: England Favored Over US
When the draw was announced for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, many US soccer fans were elated with the group they were placed in. Odds makers, however, do not appear to believe that the US is yet ready to challenge for their first-ever World Cup win.
The betting odds are available for the US' first round match with England, and they are not favorable for the US. England is an overwhelming favorite, with gamblers having to lay $225 to win $100. England is currently the third ranked squad in the world.
Those who believe that the US can pull the upset stand to make a lot of money if they gamble on that hunch and win. The US has odds of +525 to beat England. Gamblers may also chose the option of a draw.
Although those are long odds, they are not even close to the longest on the board. Several other teams will have their hands full in their opening match. Switzerland has odds of +1,000 to beat Spain, and New Zealand is +900 to upset Slovakia. Korea DPR is the longest underdog on the board, with odds of +1,00 to defeat Brazil.
Several teams have first round matches that may be too close to call. Among the even first round games are Slovenia/Algeria, Serbia/Ghana, and Greece/Korea Republic. Portugal, traditionally a strong team, has the Ivory Coast in their first match.
The World Cup is now less than two weeks away, and the US squad has already touched down in South Africa. All teams will be in the African nation by this weekend, and the upcoming week will be filled with festivities and last-minute preparations.
