The knockout stage is almost complete at the 2010 World Cup. Only games between Spain and Portugal and Paraguay and Japan remain in the round, and there has yet to be a major upset heading into the quarter-finals.

In the knockout stage, there have been two teams that were underdogs that went on to pull upsets, but neither were considered major shockers by those who follow soccer. Ghana defeated the US, and Germany beat England.

With Germany being one of the top teams in the world, it hardly came as a surprise that they were able to defeat and England squad that looked old for much of their time at the World Cup. Ghana was faster and younger than the US, but the experience factor did not help the Americans, who twice were beat on goals developed from poor defense.

Today, Spain and Paraguay will look to avoid the upset bug. Spain is one of the tournament favorites, but they are facing a Portugal team that has one of the top strikers in the world in Cristiano Ronaldo. Portugal scored seven goals in one game earlier in the World Cup, and their offense makes them more than capable of sending Spain home.

Sports books have made Spain the betting favorite, with odds of +105. Portugal returns odds of +275, and the total for the match is two. Although both teams have powerful strikers, they also both possess defensive units that can shut opposing offenses down.

In the early match of the day, Paraguay has odds of +105 to defeat Japan. The Japanese team may be happy just to be in the knockout round, but any gamblers who believe the Japan team is destined for greatness, odds of +300 are available. The total for the game is two, indicating a low scoring affair is expected.
