World Cup Betting Odds: Spain Under Pressure Today

Spain seemed like one of those teams that comes along only once every couple of decades. The Spanish squad was loaded with talent coming into the 2010 World Cup, and they were considered by many to be the favorites to win the tournament.

Today, however, will be about survival for Spain. After a stunning 1-0 loss to Switzerland, the Spanish team now must win against Chile, the group leader, to have any hopes of moving on to the knockout stage. Switzerland is taking on a Honduras team that has lost twice and has not scored a goal.

Spain does hold the goal differential and goals scored tiebreakers over Switzerland going into today's games. With both teams at three points, and Switzerland facing the lighter opponent, the goal differential, which is currently one, could change throughout the two matches.

Although Spain sits in a tie for second in the group, they are heavy favorites to defeat the top team, Chile. Spain has World Cup betting odds of -220, while Chile returns a large +600. For a team that has won its only two matches, some gamblers believe that number may be too high.

One of the reasons odds makers may have developed such a high betting line is the desperation with which Spain will be taking the pitch. Chile, for as strong as they have played, could still be left out of the next round if they lose to Spain and Switzerland makes up a two goal differential. Switzerland is a -210 favorite over Honduras, with the underdog heading into the match with odds of +575.

In Group G, Brazil has already qualified for the next round. They will be playing Portugal today, and a win or a draw would make Brazil the group winner. Portugal put up a stunning seven goals in their last match, and although they are not officially in the knockout stage, they hold a nine goal differential over the Ivory Coast.

The Ivory Coast has odds of -250 to defeat North Korea, a squad that has already been eliminated. North Korea has odds of +750. Brazil is a slight favorite over Portugal, with odds of +120. Portugal returns odds of +260.
