World Cup Betting Odds: US Versus England On Saturday
The United States and England are no strangers, with history's that are intertwined. On Saturday, the two nations will square off in a soccer match up that has been anticipated for months by fans. The World Cup 2010 opener for both teams will be hotly contested.
The betting odds suggest that England will have their way with the American squad. England, according to odds makers, are 8/15. That means a gambler would have to bet $15 to win $8. The US has odds of 11/2. The odds of a draw are 3/1.
The US team is coming off of a summer last year when they stunned the top ranked squad in the world, Spain, in the Confederations Cup. The run nearly ended with a Confederations Cup championship, but Brazil was able to score three second half goals to come back and defeat the US 3-2.
Spain and Brazil are, along with Argentina, the betting favorites to win the World Cup. England, however, is not far behind as the fourth choice of sports books. England comes into tomorrow's match a little banged up, but analysts believe they still have enough fire power to defeat the US.
Soccer popularity in the US is at an all-time high, and the national team is looking to grow that popularity by having a strong showing in the World Cup. The US' chances of competing were shortened when striker Charlie Davies was unable to rebound from a major car injury. Davies' absence leaves the US thin up front.
As was the case in the Confederations Cup, Landon Donovan will play a large role in how far the US team goes. Donovan has been one of the spark plugs on the American squad, manning the midfield and controlling the pace of the game for the US.
Game time is 2:30 PM on Saturday. Earlier matches on Saturday will feature South Korea at Greece and Argentina versus Nigeria. Host nation South Africa played Mexico in the first match of the World Cup on Friday, and the teams battled to a 1-1 draw.
