World Cup Betting Preview: Argentina And Germany Battle Again
Argentina and Germany are two of the top soccer nations in the world. When teams compete on the highest level, sometimes there is animosity that builds up, and that is the case with these two teams.
The last World Cup, both Germany and Argentina had visions of winning the tournament. Something had to give, however, in the quarter-finals when the two teams faced each other. Germany ended up winning that game on penalty kicks, and the two teams have been barking at each other ever since.
That game in 2006 did not end in jersey exchanges like most soccer matches. Instead, the two teams ended up in a fight where punches and kicks were thrown. Germany claims that Argentina shows up the referees and does not respect their opponents or the game.
"You could see their behavior at halftime of the game against Mexico," said Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, as reported by The Associated Press, "When you look at their body language and gesticulations, the way they try to influence the referees, they have no respect. It's their mentality and character and we'll have to adjust."
On Saturday, Germany fans are hoping of a repeat of 2006, but the sports books do not see this game ending the same way. Argentina is the betting favorite, with odds of +130. Germany is not an overwhelming underdog, with odds of only +200 themselves. The total for the match is 2.5.
These two teams both have strikers that are capable of putting the ball in the back of the net. History suggests that Saturday's game will be a physical one, unlike the more wide open styles that some of the other teams remaining choose to play. The winner of the match will play the winner of Spain and Paraguay in the semi-finals.
