World Cup Betting Preview Round One Day Four: Italy's Run Begins
The 2010 World Cup has been ongoing now for three days, and the defending champions have yet to take the field. That will change today when Italy begins their quest to defend their title from four years ago.
The Italian squad will take on Paraguay in the featured game tonight. Italy has odds of +110, compared to the +275 of Paraguay. Analysts, however, have been quick to point out that this is not the same Italian team that won the World Cup in 2006.
In other action today, The Netherlands will make their first appearance in this year's Cup at 7:30 AM Est. The Netherlands are large favorites over Denmark, with odds of -200. Denmark is a team that underdog gamblers will love, with odds from Bodog at +550. There are those who believe that the Netherlands have a chance to win the tournament.
Cameroon comes into today's game with Japan in the unlikely position of being a favorite. In the past Cameroon has been underdogs to some of the larger soccer nations, but they have odds of +110 to defeat Japan. Japan, on the other hand, is +255 to pull off the upset and go a leg up in their group.
In other news from the World Cup, England coach Fabio Capello is considering making a change in goal after Robert Green let in a soft goal against the US on Saturday. The goal allowed the Americans to come away with a 1-1 draw, and positioned the two squads to battle for the top seed in the group in their remaining games.
On Tuesday, three more first round matches are scheduled in South Africa. New Zealand will be taking on Slovakia, the Ivory Coast will battle Portugal, and tournament favorites Brazil, will play their first match against North Korea.
