World Series Betting Odds Change With Yunel Escobar Trade

The Atlanta Braves were already the fifth choice of odds makers to win the World Series this season before Wednesday. Now, those odds may be changing after the Braves traded shortstop Yunel Escobar to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Alex Gonzalez.

Escobar was considered to be one of the top young shortstops in the league coming into this season. The now-former Braves shortstop has had a miserable first half, and at several points of his career Escobar has had to be disciplined by manager Bobby Cox for lackluster effort.

Gonzalez, on the other hand, is known to be a true professional. In addition to the clubhouse affect, Gonzalez also comes to the Braves in a season where he is hitting for power. Gonzalez had seventeen home runs and fifty RBI's for the Blue Jays in the first half.

Atlanta had odds of 8/1 to win the World Series before the trade. Sports books should have updated odds available by the end of the day. The Braves currently lead the New York Mets by four games in the National League East.

The New York Yankees, who lost their longtime owner, George Steinbrenner to a heart attack on Tuesday, are the favorites to win the title at 3/1. Texas, a team that started the year with 30/1 odds, is not the second choice at 4/1. Texas acquired Cliff Lee in a trade shortly before the trading deadline.

Tampa Bay trails New York by two games, and the Rays are 7/1 to win a championship. Boston joins Atlanta at 8/1, and Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and St. Louis are all 10/1 choices. Pittsburgh and Baltimore have been virtually eliminated from playoff contention due to slow starts, but dreamers can get odds of 9999/1.
