The Los Angeles Lakers are the defending NBA champions and they have the best record in the NBA through the early part of this season. That is why it comes as somewhat of a surprise that rumors are circulating about a potential blockbuster trade.

The New York Post suggested on Sunday that the Lakers were considering making an offer of Andrew Bynum to the Toronto Raptors for Chris Bosh. It is an intriguing thought, but it would come with a certain element of gambling for the defending champions.

Bynum is locked in for several more seasons with the Lakers contractually, while Bosh is set to become one of the most sought after free agents this summer. Even if the Lakers could sign Bosh to an extension, there is no proof he will be the better long term player than Bynum.

Los Angeles' offense revolves around two key players, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol. Bynum understands this, where as Bosh is used to getting the ball and is featured in Toronto's offense.

The Lakers have already won a title with Bynum playing center, although he did not contribute much more than his allotment of fouls per game in last year's title run. Still, there is a chance that Bynum is playing himself into an all star roster spot so far this year.

The trade could work for the Lakers, but as one NBA analyst pointed out, "Why would they (Los Angeles) want to mess with success?" It is a good question, and one that will be answered through the progression of this rumored deal.
