Yankees and A-Rod Gambling On Treatment Over Surgery
The New York Yankees have staked their future on Alex Rodriguez. They have stood by him all off season through steroid admissions because he is one of the best baseball players in the world. They believe he will eventually lead them back to the World Series.
So with all of the circus atmosphere that has surrounded A-Rod this winter, it is the events of this week that will have Yankees management experiencing sleepless nights. Rodriguez has a torn labrum and a cyst in his hip.
At first glance, many would believe surgery would be immediately required and the star slugger would be out for three to four months. The Yankees and Rodriguez, however, have chosen an alternative method.
Rodriguez will undergo treatment and attempt to play through the pain in order to avoid surgery. Even if he is successful, it means that Rodriguez will have to play in discomfort for the entire 2009 season.
The Yankees are gambling with this approach. If the treatment works in the short term, but the pain becomes too much, Rodriguez would then still need surgery and risks missing the more important stretch run of the season.
The news comes at a bad time for Rodriguez who was looking forward to using the season as a way for people to move on after his steroid admissions. Now, if he does opt for surgery, the steroid issue will linger for as long as he is not on the field.
