The New York Yankees found out late Monday evening that their astronomical bid to sign Cliff Lee was rejected by the former Rangers ace. Instead, Lee decided to spurn both the Yankees and Rangers and sign with the Philadelphia Phillies, a team that traded him a year ago.

The rejection from Lee has placed the Yankees in a tough position. The team was hoping the addition of Lee would solidify their pitching staff and make them the betting favorites to win the World series next season, but that will not be happening anytime soon.

The Boston Red Sox made the biggest splash this winter by acquiring Adrian Gonzalez from San Diego and then signing free agent Carl Crawford. The addition of Gonzalez and Crawford has made the Red Sox the team to be in the American League East, according to the odds makers.

The betting odds are always changing, so there is plenty of time between now and next October for the Yankees to show they should be the favorites, It is not often that they go into a season as anything other than the favorites to win, so a trade could be a possibility between now and spring training.

One signing the Yankees did make Tuesday will not bring them the same rewards that would have come with Lee. Russell Martin signed to be the primary catcher in New York, but without Lee throwing to Martin, that signing seems less significant on the surface. Martin has struggled the past couple of seasons in Los Angeles.

The Phillies have moved to the top of the betting odds to win the World Series at 7/2. Boston is the second choice at 5/1, and the Yankees have now slipped to third, with 6/1 odds. If New York can land another ace before spring training, they likely would go into the year only behind the Phillies in terms of the odds.
