Yankees Gambling On Granderson To Patrol Center Field
The New York Yankees are coming off a season where they regained their spot at the top of the baseball world. They did so by throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at free agents last winter. This year, they are taking a different approach.
New York has made the biggest splash at this year's winter meetings so far by acquiring center fielder Curtis Granderson from the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees had to give up several of their young talented players to complete the trade.
The Yankees will now be gambling on the idea that Granderson's horrible numbers against left handed pitchers could be offset by the friendly fences at the new Yankee Stadium. Granderson hit over twenty home last year for Detroit.
The move puts a dent in Johnny Damon's plans to return to the Bronx. While Damon still could be signed by the Yankees, it will now be on their terms and not on the terms the player is seeking.
Damon went into the off season hoping for a four year deal. It is unlikely the Yankees would give any more than two years, three if they decide to reward Damon for his loyalty to the organization. That may leave Damon searching for another team.
The Granderson trade also made it more difficult for the Yankees to go after Toronto ace Roy Halladay. The Blue Jays have wanted to move Halladay for over a year now, but still have not found a package that they are comfortable with.
Granderson, meanwhile, brings the Yankees the strong fielder the team has been looking for. he also hammers right handed pitching and is considered one of the top clubhouse guys in the league.
